Do Homeopathic Remedies Work?

by | Feb 1, 2021

Homeopathic remedies are an excellent way to treat so many ailments out there. From tummy aches, to cold and flu symptoms, bee stings and aches and pains, there is most likely a homeopathic formula for you. The tricky part about homeopathic remedies are they are very specific to what your symptoms are. If you have a cold and take a homeopathic remedy that does not address your specific symptoms, it may not work. For example, take a look at these remedies for the common cold in children:

Aconitum: This remedy is useful primarily during the first 24 hours after the onset of a cold. Typically, the child develops her cold or cough after being exposed to dry cold weather. She wakes from sleep with a dry, hoarse, croupy cough, especially worse at night and after midnight.

Allium Cepa: This common remedy for colds is effective when the child has a profuse, fluent, burning nasal discharge which is worse in a warm room and better in open air. The nasal discharge will irritate the child’s nostrils, causing pain from simply wiping his nose.

Arsenicum: These children have a burning nasal discharge that irritates the nostrils and upper lip. They are very chilly and are sensitive to drafts or cold air. They may, in fact, sneeze from any change in temperature. Typically, the cold begins in the nose and moves down to the throat (once it goes down into the chest a different remedy is usually needed).

That is why it is important to find the right remedy for your exact symptoms, is it a cold with a runny nose, dry cough and slight fever? Or simply a cold with a runny nose? As you can see, each remedy will tell you exactly which symptoms it addresses, and if you are unsure, take a couple different ones together as they are safe to mix with one another.

I keep several different types of homeopathic remedies around as it is best to take it immediately at the onset of symptoms. Once you start using homeopathic remedies, you will start to know which ones work for which ailments. Most vials will have the information written right on the bottle, but you may want to also look up the information online, as what you find online will be much more in-depth.

Below is some information directly from the Hyland’s Homeopathic website. I found Hyland’s to be the easiest to use with most adults and children, as they dissolve instantly and can be used easily with infants. Homeopathic medicines are safe, all-natural options for the entire family. However, a lot of people are aware of the benefits associated with homeopathic medicine. In order to help educate people on this all-natural alternative, Hyland’s, Inc. has developed an overview of homeopathy in the form of this Q&A. More information can be found at www.hylands.com.

Q: What is homeopathy?

A: According to the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States, homeopathy is the art and the science of healing the sick by using substances capable of causing the same symptoms, syndromes and conditions when administered to healthy people.

Q: So, how does homeopathy work?

A: Homeopathic medicines are thought to act according to the “Principle of Similars” and the “Principle of Minimum Dose.” These principles state that if a drug causes certain symptoms in a healthy person, that same drug may be given in very small doses to relieve those same symptoms in a person exhibiting them from a different cause. More simply put, with homeopathy, “like cures like,” the natural ingredients used in homeopathy help the body rid itself of not just the symptoms (as with conventional medicines) but the cause of the symptoms, in a completely natural way.

Q: When was homeopathy first introduced?

A: Homeopathy has been attributed to German physician and medical translator Samuel C.F. Hahneman (1755-1843), who first observed and codified the system more than 200 years ago.

Q: Are homeopathic medicines safe?

A: Yes. Homeopathic medicines are safe and non-habit forming.

Q: How do we know homeopathic medicines work?

A: Clinical data from trials, case observations and case reports have been accumulated for over 200 years. These data form the basis of the homeopathic literature.

Q: Who uses homeopathic medicines?

A: Homeopathic medicines are suitable for anyone needing symptom relief. Users are all ages and backgrounds. Homeopathic medicines are a safe, effective, and natural option for the entire family.

Q: Can homeopathic medicines be used in conjunction with conventional medicines?

A: Yes. Homeopathic medicines have not been shown to interact with other medicines. For this reason, homeopathic medicines are a great first line of defense in the face of many illnesses.

Q: Are homeopathic medicines regulated?

A: Yes. Homeopathic medicines are classified as drugs and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. They are also manufactured to the standards set by the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia Convention of the United States.

Q: How can homeopathic medicines be used to provide safe relief for children?

A: Because homeopathic medicines contain such small amounts of natural active ingredients, they are a safe option for children in alleviating many common childhood ailments. For example, the current movement to encourage the recall of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines is driven by the fact that misuse in dosages of those medicines can result in greater illness or even death in small children. Homeopathic medicines do not carry the same risk, because they do not use the same active ingredients that are under evaluation by the Food & Drug Administration. Unlike withdrawn over-the-counter infant cough and cold medicines, homeopathic medicines offer children a wide margin of safety.

Dosing and Directions

Most of the time you will find the dose to take right on the bottle. Typically for adults it is 4-5 pellets or tablets under the tongue until they dissolve. For children typically it is 2-3 pellets or tablets under the tongue until they dissolve. If it is hard for your child to take a tablet and let it dissolve, then use a liquid variation often sold in little plastic tubes, one dose per tube. There is no difference between pellets and tablets, it is really just a preference and pellets tend to taste sweeter.

Do Not Touch The Tablets, this will start the absorption process before it even gets into your body and the oils on your fingers can affect the potency of the pellets or tablets.

If you have a vial, twist the cap until the right number of pills are in the cap and then toss them in your mouth. If it is a bottle with a cap, shake the amount you need into the cap and toss them into your mouth.

Ideally no food or drink 10 minutes before and 10 minutes after taking the tablets.

Usually taking the homeopathic 2-3 times a day is fine.

For severe symptoms I would take it every hour. For Arnica and pain related issues, 6c will be better for small areas of the body, 30c for large areas of the body and 200ck for multiple painful areas. When my calves or neck hurts, I take it every hour, sometimes every 30 minutes to get me over the initial pain hump. Same goes for other symptoms.
