Digestive Enzymes – What Are They Good For?

by | Nov 22, 2023

We live in a world where shelf life is more important than human life. We cannot always trust our food sources, the impact the numerous medications our physicians push on us have as they tell us “they are not harmful”, and the supplements the infomercials tell us we need without providing details on where they are produced or how they are sourced. Further, as we get older our body produces less and less of the natural digestive enzymes needed to process the food we eat. Postpartum women also experience gut issues due to the trauma of giving birth.

This can be overbearing to all our organs causing “Dis-Ease” in our body. Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Fatty Liver and the list goes on.

What Do Digestive Enzymes Do?

When our gut bacteria is healthy, we can digest food well, even hard to digest plant fibers, carbohydrates, and sugars. However, our gut bacteria is often compromised because we are not eating a variety of foods that promote gut health, see my blog on prebiotics and probiotics.

Further as we get older, or after giving birth, our gut bacteria can change making it hard to digest foods. This is where digestive enzymes are essential. Taking a digestive enzyme with each meal can help you process:

  1. Gluten and gliadin from highly refined flours
  2. Dairy from poor sources (raw dairy is optimal as it still has all it’s natural enzymes)
  3. Toxic sugars like high fructose corn-syrup often found in breads, gravy, soda, flavored water and hidden in ingredients like natural flavors.
  4. Meat and dairy fillers such as carrageenan, guar gum, and xanthan gum
  5. Pesticides that cover the fruits and vegetables we eat as well as coat the non-organic wheat that sits in vats in the hot sun developing mold spores (see picture below).

These are just a few of the culprits our digestive system is up against.

Digest enzymes from a good source will help digest these harmful foods, reducing:

  • Gas
  • Bloating
  • Digestive cramping
  • Acid reflux
  • And…potentially disease.

All Digestive Enzymes Are Not Created Equally
